Morbid obesity is a debilitating disease that, by definition, threatens the well being of those suffering from it.  Our multi-disciplinary weight loss surgery program at LGMC was created to help alleviate this problemóassisting patients in the Lafayette, Louisiana area to living a healthier life. If you take a close look at our surgical weight loss program, you will find that it is unique in its design and scope.

Our bariatric surgery program at Lafayette General Medical Center is distinctive. We offer preoperative education as well as postoperative support for patients looking for healthy weight loss options. Not only will we guide you through the steps necessary to have bariatric surgery, but we also provide the necessary tools that are fundamental to your postoperative success for many years to come after undergoing weight loss surgery. Nutrition, exercise, behavior modification counseling and support groups, are among the resources offered to insure your success after weight loss surgery.  Our goal is to offer you a personalized weight loss program that will help you succeed in reaching your goals.

The bariatric surgery department at Lafayette General Medical Center is designated as an Accredited Center under the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

The MBSAQIP designation is awarded to both the surgeons, Medical Director Philip Gachassin, M.D. and Dennis Eschete, M.D., and to Lafayette General Medical Center for meeting the rigorous requirements of an Accredited Center. The bariatric surgery department at LGMC believes that surgery is a tool, not a cure, to help patients lead a healthy life.

The delivery of high-quality perioperative and long-term follow-up care are among the many prerequisites. Additionally, the health care facility must also have performed at least 125 bariatric surgical cases in the preceding 12-month period. The MBSAQIP designation helps identify where patients can expect to receive safer and more effective surgical treatment.

Lafayette Generalís Bariatric Surgery Department performs laparoscopic gastric bypass, laparoscopic adjustable gastric band and laparoscopic gastric sleeve procedures. Along with the surgeons, the bariatric support team includes a registered nurse, dietitian, patient advocate, behavior modification educator, licensed practical counselor and an exercise physiologist.

With the designation of an Accredited Center, the bariatric surgery program is now eligible for Medicare coverage.

Free educational sessions are open to the public and held twice monthly in Lafayette Generalís Owen Auditorium.

Non-Surgical Weight Loss Program

Lafayette General Medical Centerís Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence has developed a comprehensive weight loss program for people that want to lose weight, but for whom surgery is not a desire or option. The Non-Surgical Weight Loss program is an ideal avenue for patients who may exceed the weight limit for surgery, do not have insurance to cover the cost of surgery or may just be interested in losing only 20 to 30 pounds. The program, underway since November 2012, helps people make realistic dietary changes under the continuous guidance of a physician, dietician and support staff.
Benjamin Doga, M.D., oversees the program at Acadiana Weight Loss Surgery, located at Lafayette General Surgical Hospital. Scheduled visits occur every Tuesday and include sessions with a dietician, behavior modification educator and exercise physiologist. The goal is to help people safely lose weight and keep it off by learning new food choices and habits. It is essentially a lifestyle modification program that pursues the best course for each individual.

Participants can choose a three-month, six-month or one-year plan. Dr. Doga will evaluate patients to help determine their best options, which can include meal replacement and/or pharmaceuticals to help suppress appetite, and participants will receive constant support from professionals throughout the program. In addition, the support staff works with LGMC Wellness at the Townhouse fitness center for exercise and training regimens and routines.
