Surgery: RNY Gastric Bypass
Date: August 11, 2008
Pounds Lost: 115
As a child, I suffered with numerous orthopedic injuries that resulted in traction, surgery and rehabilitation. When I reached adulthood, weight became an issue even after years of dieting and trying numerous weight loss programs and fad diets. I could not achieve significant long-term weight loss and years of obesity began to take its toll. I developed high blood pressure, sleep apnea and aggravated my orthopedic problems. In 2008 my orthopedist recommended total knee replacement. At this time I began researching surgical options, physicians and hospital programs specializing in bariatric services in south Louisiana.
After attending LGMC's information session, I began working with the multi-disciplinary bariatric team to explore surgical options, lifestyle changes and prepare for my weight loss journey.
On August 11, 2008, I had laparoscopic RNY surgery performed at LGMC. Since then I am at my goal weight, 105 pounds lighter, and no longer have sleep apnea and high blood pressure. I am mindful that gastric bypass surgery is only a tool to assist me with continued lifestyle changes. The bariatric team and the monthly support group provide education and encouragement for me to continue this journey. For now, my knee surgery is on hold. I am truly able to enjoy life's great gifts.
