LGMC's School of Health Sciences offers the following programs:
The LGMC Practical Nursing Program provides qualified students with the knowledge and skills necessary to fulfill licensure requirements of the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the State of Louisiana. The Practical Nursing program progresses from simple to complex in all areas of instruction (classroom, lab, and clinical settings).
Program Length: 13-months
Hours of Instruction:
Monday through Friday. Classroom hours are from 8 am - 4 pm. Clinical hours are 6:45 am - 3:30 pm
A new course begins January 2011. Application packets will be available online beginning February 2010.
Tuition Cost: $10,000 tuition and approximately $1,800 for textbooks, uniforms and supplies
Qualification Requirements: Applicants must be high school graduates or hold a Department of Education General Equivalency Diploma (GED), score appropriately on selected pre-admission examinations, submit a completed application with all required documentation and fees. Individuals serving court-imposed probation for a felony conviction do not qualify for admission.

After 4 years of non-practice as an LPN, the Louisiana State Board of Practical Nurse Examiners (LSBPNE) requires Practical Nurses to complete an LPN Refresher Course. The LGMC School of Health Sciences' LPN Refresher Course is LSBPNE-approved and involves individualized one-on-one instruction. Upon successful completion of the course, the Practical Nurse will be eligible to reinstate his/her license.
LSBPNE recommends a minimum of 6 six weeks of instruction/review and a minimum of 80 clinical hours per nurse. Refresher Course length at the School of Health Sciences varies with each nurse.
Hours of Instruction: Determined by Faculty Coordinator and Nurse
The LPN Refresher Course is offered year-round. The IV Therapy Certification course begins every February.
Qualifications/Requirements: Evidence of previous licensure as a Practical Nurse in the State of Louisiana and LSBPNE approval of enrollment in the course. Individuals serving court-imposed probations for a felony convictions do not qualify for this course.
Course Components: Skills review, IV Therapy Certification (40 hours), AIDS update, Psychiatric clinical rotation, Med-Surg clinical rotation, and Outpatient Surgery rotation.
Cost: $3,000 (does not include textbooks, uniforms, supplies, etc.). If the course does not include IV Therapy Certification, tuition is $2,600.
