An important advantage to the Mental Health Unit of Lafayette General Medical Center is our ability to provide psychiatric care in the security of a full-service medical facility. When the need arises, routine or emergency, LGMC’s Mental Health Unit offers the ideal setting for treating dual (medical/psychiatric) diagnoses—particularly for elderly patients.
Part of our compassionate care is the understanding of a patient’s need for privacy. Admission to a general medical center minimizes many of the privacy issues associated with psychiatric treatment. We take special care to preserve our patient’s anonymity.
Patient’s Private Physician
Continuity of care is another important focus that we have at LGMC’s Mental Health Unit. Unlike other psychiatric programs, the patient’s personal physician is encouraged to follow his or her medical condition while at our Mental Health Unit. Medical histories, physicals and any needed medical follow-up are essential parts of the multidisciplinary treatment and aftercare planning.
Admissions
Admissions can be arranged by calling the Mental Health Unit of Lafayette General Medical Center at (337) 289-7095. Emergency admission can be arranged 24 hours a day, seven days a week at the emergency department of Lafayette General Medical Center.
Individualized Treatment
At Lafayette General’s Mental Health Unit, each patient is treated with respect and dignity and every treatment plan is individually structured.
The various interventions that our staff provides includes:- Diagnostic and treatment capabilities – specialists consults, physical therapy, speech therapy, respiratory therapy, dialysis, skin team for wound care, CT, MRI, EEG, GI Lab, cardiology, X-rays, and 24-hour physician availability.
- Neuropsychologist consults and group therapy
- Occupational therapy – community and personal skills
- Social worker – group, family, marital and individual therapies
- Therapeutic recreation – exercise program, leisure skills and development skills
- Nursing staff – educational groups
